Where does our water come from?

  1. The drinking water supplied to homes in County Dublin is supplied by the River Liffey, the River Dodder and the River Vartry.
  2. All the water comes from either rain, hail or snow.
  3. Some rainfall will evaporate soon after it falls, while the rest will either join streams and rivers, or will seep through the ground to join underground water supplies.

The Water Cycle explained - Youtube Clip

The below video explains and demonstrates the various stages of the water cycle process. We have carried out a number of experiment which have assisted us in developing an understanding of the water cycle process.

How Much Water Does It Take???

HOW MUCH WATER DOES IT TAKE TO...
•Brush your teeth? - 2 to 5 gallons

•Wash the car? - 50 gallons

•Use the dishwasher? - 8 to 15 gallons

•Flush the toilet? - 1.5 to 4 gallons (each flush)

•Take a shower or bath? - 17 to 24 gallons

•Run the washing machine? - 35 to 50 gallons (each load)

Task
Calculate how many litres each of the above uses if I gallon equals 3.785 litres.

Build your own Gloggster

The children in the class will be placed into five groups. Using the knowledge from previous ICT lessons the children will work in their groups to develop a glogster on their given topic. The topics are as follows;
  1. Transpiration
  2. Condensation
  3. Evaporation
  4. Precipitation
  5. Tips for saving water
Using the information gained through the hands on approach of the water cycle the child will develop their own 'poster' which will be presented to the class on completion.

Below is a sample glogster on the water cycle process

Water Treatment

Before water is safe to drink it has to be cleaned in a water treatment plant.

This happens in three simple steps:
1. Coagulation. Chemicals are added to form tiny, sticky particles, which slowly gather, removing colour and dirt.

2. Sedimentation. The dirt particles become so heavy that they sink.

3. Filtration. The clear water is passed through filters, which remove any remaining pieces of dirt.
